Some of the largest cities in New York State are situated in the western half of the state. Buffalo, the second-largest city with 1.2 million people, is situated where Lake Erie narrows into the Niagara River. Rochester is the third-largest city, located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario about one hour east of Buffalo and one hour west of Syracuse, and is home to 1.1 million people. Both cities have extensive transit systems that not only serve the cities but also the surrounding villages. In addition, there is transit service for the 140,000 people in Chautauqua County including in Jamestown, which is about an hour southwest of Buffalo and an hour east of Erie, Pennsylvania, and Dunkirk, about 30 minutes north of Jamestown.
