The Chautauqua Area Regional Transit System
provides both regular and paratransit service in
Chautauqua County, mainly concentrated in the cities of Jamestown, on
Chautauqua Lake with a population of about 32,000, and Dunkirk, located on Lake
Erie and home to about 13,000. The
service operates Monday to Friday using cutaway minibuses for both the scheduled
service and paratransit service with seven routes in
Jamestown operating from 6:00AM to 4:30PM, and two routes in Dunkirk running
from 7:30AM until 5:30PM. In Jamestown
the buses routes are interlined in order to provide maximum coverage with a
limited number of vehicles while ensuring half-hour service from the Junction
on West Second Street in the downtown area, while in Dunkirk the two routes
operate in opposite directions in a one-way loop around the city, meeting once
an hour in front of City Hall.
