The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is responsible for the public transit in Niagara and Erie Counties, as well at the Buffalo-Niagara and Niagara Falls airports and the boat harbour.  The bus system, known as NFTA-Metro, provides bus service in Buffalo, Lockport and Niagara Falls with a fleet of 340 buses, consisting of New Flyer D40, NovaBus Classic, NABI 416, NovaBus LFS and Gillig Advantage buses.  The NFTA also operates a 6.6-mile-long MetroRail system to provide quick commuter service into downtown Buffalo.

The NFTA operates the MetroRail system, which has both an aboveground section in downtown Buffalo, where it acts as a streetcar, and a high-speed underground section extending to the south campus of SUNY Buffalo.  Here, 111 leads a two-car train seen on Main Street at Church Station on May 24, 2004, and is still painted in the old livery.

118 was spotted on Main Street in downtown Buffalo on Sept. 4, 2007. These vehicles were built by the Tokyu Car Corporation of Yokohama, Japan, and officially began service on May 18, 1985.

The 1990 Orion I buses were the oldest buses in Buffalo when this photo was taken, which shows 864 and 866 parked at the Cold Springs garage on Michigan Avenue.  This photo was taken on May 24, 2004.

The NFTA is one of few US transit systems to have purchased the Canadian-made Classic bus.  413 was a 1992 MCI Classic and is shown at the Cold Spring garage on May 24, 2004.  This bus has since been retired.

9309 was a 1993 New Flyer D40, spotted on North Division Street in downtown Buffalo on May 24, 2004.  This bus is painted in the new livery first seen on the NovaBus LFS buses.

9623 is a 1996 NovaBus TC-40102A, shown laying up at the Windermere Loop near the South Campus on May 24, 2004.  This photo shows the larger condenser box used on Nova Classics compared to that on the MCI Classic above, along with double-width exit doors instead of the single-stream doors on the older buses.

2010 is a 2000 NovaBus LFS, spotted at the Cold Springs garage on May 24, 2004.  These buses are fairly uncommon in the US, but were available to American customers for a few years from NovaBus facilities in Schenectady, NY.

2206 is a 2002 Gillig Advantage T-40, spotted waiting to resume service near the Metro Transport Center on Sept. 4, 2007.  This was the first of several orders the NFTA have since placed with Gillig Corporation.

2401 is a Gillig Advantage T-29 purchased in 2004.  This bus was spotted at the Cold Springs garage on May 24, 2004.

2513 is a 2005 Gillig Advantage T-40 shown on North Division Street in downtown Buffalo on Sept. 4, 2007.

2608 is a 2006 Gillig Advantage T-40 hybrid, seen on Washington Street crossing North Division Street on Sept. 4, 2007.  These Gillig hybrid buses have since appeared in other upstate New York cities such as Albany, Binghamton and Syracuse.
