The second largest urban area in Canada is the
Montreal Region, with a population of 3.6 million people. It is surpassed in size only by the Greater
Toronto Area. In 2002, two of the former
counties underwent significant municipal restructuring, the Montreal Urban
Community becoming the new City of Montreal, and the MRC de Champlain becoming
the new City of Longueuil. Transit service in and around Montreal is
provided by the Agence Métropolitaine
de Transport, or AMT, which is made up of nearly twenty separate transit
systems: service in Montreal is provided by the STM; in Laval, by the STL; and
in Longueuil, by the RTL. There are also more than a dozen smaller
systems providing service to towns on the outskirts, as well as at least one
independent transit agency, and a commuter train system operating as far as
Hudson, McMasterville and St-Jérôme. Click below to see pictures of buses in and
around Montreal.
