The Green Mountain State is the least populated state east of the Mississippi River, and has only three cities with a population of more that 10,000 people. As a result, there are relatively few transit systems in the state. The largest cities are Burlington, with a regional population of about 150,000; Montpelier, the state capital, with a population of about 50,000; and Rutland, with a population of about 65,000.
