Established in 1967 to assume transit service
in Erie dating back to 1897, the Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority provides
bus service in Erie County and the city of Erie with a fleet of about 50 buses,
of which twelve run on CNG. The urban
transit fleet consists almost entirely of 35’ long buses, including TMC RTS; New
Flyer C35LF, D35LF, C40LF and D40LF; Orion II and Gillig Advantage buses. Buses operate seven days a week—though not on
major public holidays—and meet at Perry Square on State Street near 6th
Street in downtown Erie. In addition,
there is regularly scheduled service from the Millcreek Mall to the borough of
Edinboro. The EMTA also operates the
free “Bayliner Trolley” service between downtown and the Presque Isle Bay
waterfront using Gillig Advantage trolley replicas, along with a paratransit
system called LIFT which not only provides door-to-door service for disabled
passengers within Erie’s urban area but also for registered passengers in the
county’s rural areas where the city buses do not operate.
