Durham Region Transit was formed on January 1st,
2006, from the four transit agencies in the Regional Municipality of
Durham: Clarington Transit, the Oshawa
Transit Commission, Whitby Transit, and the Ajax-Pickering Transit Authority,
which itself had been a merger of Ajax Transit and Pickering Transit in
September 2001. There is also new
service in the rural northern areas of the region to communities in the townships
of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge. To serve a population of 561,000, there are
about 200 buses in the fleet, mostly MCI Classic, Orion V and VI, and NovaBus LFS vehicles inherited from the four
predecessors. In addition, Durham Region
Transit has placed several recent orders for New Flyer D40LF and Xcelsior buses as part of a consortium of several mid-sized
southern Ontario transit systems, which purchase nearly identical buses in
order to reduce costs for the individual agencies.
